The dreaded words clients hate to hear. Meal prep. Today I’m going to talk about how meal prepping is such a useful tool in reaching fitness goals and why you should incorporate it into your routine.
Firstly, what is meal prep? Meal prep is when you will prepare the food you plan to eat for the week ahead of you, cooking all of your meals in one go and storing in, probably, Tupperware and placing them in the fridge, ready to be called upon when needed. Doing this does require some skills, proportioning the correct amount of food, separating them evenly, and organizing them for the days to come. On top of that, you obviously need basic cooking skills, this is a skill every person should have. Relying on others to make food, or ordering
your meals from food delivery websites are simply not sustainable, health-wise, or financially.
Now, why is this so advantageous when pursuing a fitness goal? Reason one being if this is your situation, you’re pursuing a goal. Then chances are you have macros to hit daily. For a lot of clients, hitting these macros consistently can be a big task. There is a lot of guesswork involved, systems that don’t really make sense, or simply a lack of a system to hit macros. Some days they hit some days not. You should know by now, that this approach will not cut it. Hitting your macros 85-100% of the time is what is needed to reach any goal.
Changing this factor in clients’ approach to their diet can be revolutionary. So having your meals prepared ahead of time, ensuring that the macros are being hit on a daily basis, is essential for anyone serious about their goals.
With proper meal prep, you will ensure that there are appropriate macros in each meal, that will line up with your goal, removing the guesswork in day-to-day life. It will ensure you do not lose inhibitions and order an UberEats if the day was a little rough. It will ensure you are eating the correct amount of vegetables necessary, as changing meals from day to day can often result in a decrease in vegetable intake. Most importantly it will ensure you are sticking to the plan, as we know, consistency is everything in fitness. With meals prepared, in line with your macros, in your fridge waiting for you at home it will be very difficult for you to deviate from the plan and fall off track – something that we see constantly as coaches.
Lastly, I want to touch on the time management aspect of meal prep. A big limiting factor in a lot of clients’ lifestyles is simply not having enough time to get everything done. From college work to raising kids and everything in between. It can be very tough to delegate time accordingly to all our tasks. A big part of the day can be spent cooking and cleaning up after your meals. Roughly an hour or more per day if you are doing it day by day. What meal prep allows, is for you to spend that same amount of time, one hour (with practice) to prepare lunch and dinners for up to 5 days ahead. What you have done there is eliminated the cooking and cleaning time for 5 full days, and reduced it to one day. Not only that but all of these meals are guaranteed to keep in line with your goal.
